There was a woman who was ‘ruining my life!’
She followed me to every social gathering and sought to befriend anyone I would become close to.
She’s at all the best parties and stalks me on social media too.
She is very influential, her words are convincing – people seem to want to follow her and find themselves quoting her words.
Even little girls in the schoolyard, sisters, cousins, and friends quote her to each other.
She is my ‘false audience’ and goes ahead of me to every gathering I attend and whispers in people’s ears about me.
She comes between the best of friends and prevents them seeing each other again.
Sometimes, she is me.
Though, I rarely realise it at the time – as her presence often goes unnoticed.
She is a ‘she’ because she is named in the bible, in the book of Proverbs. Her name is lady Folly.
Folly’s Invitation and Promise
The foolish woman is loud;
she is ignorant and knows nothing.
She sits at the door of her house,
on a seat at the high places of the town,
calling to those who pass by,
who are going straight on their way,
“You who are simple, turn in here!”
The only way to prevent her taking charge in my life is to name her and call her out publicly on her tricks and lies.
Declare war in the name of her greatest enemy – Wisdom.
Wisdom, borne from the love of a Father, to the Son, through the Spirit… in me.
Folly sides with ‘The Accuser’ and so has been defeated by the One whose name is above all other names – Jesus Christ.
It is in His name we pray – He is the life of the party and conquers Folly and her gate-crashing ways.
Do not listen to her and do not fear her..
“And now, my children, listen to me;
and be attentive to the words of my mouth.
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways;
do not stray into her paths.”
